Many who are seeking a good night’s rest but can’t seem to find it, turn to a memory foam mattress. The advertising sounds good and someone who is constantly tired due to sleepless nights will certainly be receptive to learning more.
But coming up with memory foam mattress reviews is hard! Consumer Reports.org launched an extensive research into mattresses and they had a difficult time recommending specific brand names.
Why? Because every body is different and we all tend to sleep in different positions. What may be a good sleeping mattress for you might not be for your spouse. We all have preferences in comfort and that was making a review test extremely difficult for the researches at Consumer Reports.
With that said, an informal poll was conducted of owners of a popular foam mattress – Tempur-Pedic. Those that responded, three-fourths said they were completely or very satisfied with their purchase. So if you’re looking for some confirmation for this brand, the vast majority was pretty darn happy with their Tempur-Pedic purchase! And that’s a good thing because these type of specialty mattresses are not cheap.
Tempur-Pedic introduced memory foam mattress over 10 years ago. With aggressive marketing and throngs of happy sleepers, Tempur-Pedic is the #1 in specialty sleep brands and ranks fourth in overall mattress sales.
And as previously mentioned, these memory foam mattresses are not cheap. Prices range from $1,200 for the OriginalBed (queen) all the way up to the GrandBed which runs around $6,000.
Tempur-pedic is an 8-inch-thick foam mattress that sits atop a box spring. Some reviewers noticed a strong odor with the mattress. The company said this is “a normal condition of the product” but the smell should weaken as time goes on. Tempur-Pedic will replace the mattress if the smell just doesn’t go away. The mattress does have a 20-year limited warranty.
Naturally, with a product popularity knock-offs are sure to follow. You can purchase memory foam for less than Tempur-Pedic’s offerings but not all memory foam mattresses are created equal.
Popular memory foam mattress are made from visco elastic, latex and polyurethane. Visco elastic is the most durable and also the most expensive. It was invented by NASA in the 60s and the type of foam used in Tempur-Pedic and Bergad Isoform mattressess.
Note: Bergad Isoform mattresses are half the price of Tempur-Pedic and many reviews gave them similar comfort ratings.
Speaking of price, there are major differences in ranges when comparing budget memory foam mattress to premium lines. This boils down to foam density. Top of the line models have 4-6 pounds where the cheaper, not as durable foam mattresses weigh in around 2-3 pounds.
Polyurethane foam costs less but it doesn’t hold up well. Polyurethane has a tendency to compress over time.
For allergy suffers, latex foam is a viable option. Foam mattress are resistant to dust mites and latex doesn’t release fumes. But some are allergic to latex so this type of foam is not an option.
Latex foam breaths so hotspots don’t accumulate like they can with other materials. Some feel that latex is a bit ‘springy-er’ so moving around in bed is easy to do. The downside is that latex is more expensive. And heavy!
Besides the folks at Tempra-Pedic, Sealy contribution to the latex mattress market is called Sealy Posturepedic Springfree although it is constructed with synthetic latex vs. natural latex.
Other options in latex foam mattress include the OMI OrganicPedic line (which is very environmentally friendly). OMI hand-crafts their mattresses from 100% organic materials. A neat features with OMI mattresses is that layers of latex foam can be individually replaced which greatly adds to the life of the product.
Memory foam mattresses do take some getting used to. They’re different! Although most users that invest in a quality mattress enjoy it, but not all do.
If you think you’d like to give a foam mattress a try, but are concerned about the steep cost involved, there is another option – a foam mattress pad. These lie over the top of your mattress and provide you with some of the benefits of a full foam mattress. But at a reduced cost.
